Don't believe it until you see it, and then see it twice.

2020's decade

today the fad for the gullible is: becoming a youtube superstar. just spend all your free time to create dishonest and overproduced videos of questionable acts, in order to get views that will become obsolete in 10 years time.

alternate version: become a twitch streaming star. you deserve to get paid for playing video games, because you are charismatic and who cares if there are homeless people sleeping on the streets. these video streams are solving important problems, and please buy my sponsored soft drink that contains only FIVE artificial flavours.

2021

programming edition:the fad for the gullible this month is Rust. Why should you use Rust? "Because it's super secure." What software currently uses Rust? "Nothing." How does the toolchain for Rust look like? "Don't look at the toolchain. Just use these opaque complex binaries."

2020

today the fad for the gullible is: taking a vaccine. People think taking a vaccine is going to make them safe. They believe fervently in it.

weighted blankets: (can't you just get this from having multiple blankets...?) EDIT: having enough blankets that they feel heavy is OK. Buying a blanket with weight in it, is for fools.

today the fad is: sleeping in hammocks. someone says its revolutionary. sleeping in a bed isn't good enough? it seems to work for most people. I can't remember a time I ever thought a hammock was comfortable enough to sleep in, although the swinging sensation is disorienting and fun.

2018

Air fryer: (It's really just a convection oven. Air fryer is a buzzword).

today the fad is: My pillow. There always seems to be some 'As seen on tv' piece of trash that enraptures the gullible public.

2013

today the fad is: bitcoin. Apparently, some people think they beat the game of life by investing in imaginary money. Nope. Life can't be beat that easily. Try again. No free lunch.

2010's

Tattoos. these just make me sad. Remember, with a tattoo, there is no going back. Modern culture should be ashamed of itself.
