These days, people will use directed wifi antennas, for building to building data transfer, but it's also possible to do optical transmission, and it's not that expensive. For example, the HFBR-1312TZ/H2316TZ Avago Technologies (from 2014, check for newer tech) transmitter and receiver can be even faster than wifi (equivalent to fiber). The prices are around $45 (2014 dollars) for each.
